I've never played a Dino Crisis game before although, as usual, I've seen Steve play one. So I'm thinking I really ought to make some sort of effort to see what all the fuss is about.

As much as I loathe tank controls in games, which is the best game to start with? Are they in order or are they ok to play on their own without having to follow a continuing storyline? Are all the games with tank controls or do they get more normal? Also, do I have to dress up as a dinosaur in order to get the full level of enjoyment out of them?

Because I can make a costume, no problem. Take me, like, five minutes tops...

I was gonna be like 'whattt, there are no tanks' and then I learned what tank controls were so I don't feel like such a noob. They're not terribly bad in this game once you get a hang of the controls. Definitely not as bad as the first couple Resident Evils.

As for where you should start - well, at the beginning. Har har har. The first one is really the best one - better characters, storyline, imo better game play, the dinosaurs despite bein' all like, cute and fuzzly are also flippin' scary and they'll often chase you from room to room, and it's very investigative so you'll need a notepad to keep track of the bajillion codes they throw at you and expect you to remember. Popular sentiment says that DC 2 is better... you'll probably kill more dinosaurs in the first ten minutes of the 2nd as you will in the 1st (no joke either), but it plays more like an arcade game. And it's quite short too. Don't worry about the 3rd, no one else's heard about that one. :p

Yeah, I heard the 3rd one is loved by few and hated by many. Dinosaur mutants in space or something?

Good to know the controls aren't as bad as the early RE games - I really hated the camera angles on them as well. We've got both the first two games but not the third so I'm guessing I'll have a go with 1 and see how long it takes for me to rage-quit.

Current estimates are around the three minute mark ;)

Have to say, the thought of being chased by dinosaurs from room to room both terrifies me and makes me a little bit eep-ish at the same time. Whatever eep-ish may mean...

Well, as long as you kill them you can avoid that problem. ;P

Haha, it's not that bad - I know the first two will definitely chase you a bit if you don't finish them off, and there's just a handful of others that are programmed to do it as well. It's not that bad though. And some of them will play dead too - so make sure there's a blood pool around them before strolling past or you'll get tail-whipped. ;)

And use the darts!

Wait for blood - got it.

Going to fire up the first game later on today and see how it goes. I'll be gobsmacked if I last more than my predicted 3 minutes, I can tell you.

Any recommendations on which platform to start playing this? A friend has it on PS1 or PS2, I dont know, but I'm sure I could borrow it for a bit, or is it worth getting it for PC?

DC and DC2 were both for the original playstation platform, Dino Stalker was for PS2 and DC3 was an XBox exclusive. I'm not sure how they play on PC but the playstation versions are good.

You can't get the 3rd one on PC as far as I know (but by all accounts the only thing the 3rd one is good for is using as a coaster) but it would be better to stick to the Playstation version. The PC one is a port and a crappy one at that - if you look at the Resident Evil games released around the same time for PC you'll see they are limiting in ways a PC game shouldn't be. DC will be just as bad if not worse - and ugly as hell to boot because you can't mess with the settings.
